Three CONMEBOL sides
beyond the obvious two. Uruguay. Colombia. Ecuador.

Argentina is the defending champion and Brazil is hiring its first foreign manager in modern history. Both are covered in their own per-team packs. This page is about the three South American nations behind them with a credible knockout-stage case at the 2026 World Cup.

Uruguay under Marcelo Bielsa, Colombia after their Copa America 2024 final, and the deepest Ecuadorian squad ever assembled. The three squads share one structural trait: a spine made up of Champions League regulars and Premier League starters, finally arriving at the same tournament cycle.

I.Uruguay

Group H · Marcelo Bielsa · the squad with the best midfield in the Americas

Bielsa, Valverde, and the post-Suárez identity

Uruguay arrive at the 2026 World Cup managed by Marcelo Bielsa for the third major tournament — the Argentine head coach took the job in May 2023 with an explicit brief from the Uruguayan federation to rebuild around the post-Suárez generation, and his tenure has been simultaneously the most stylistically distinctive and the most volatile in the country's modern football history. Bielsa's 4-3-3 is the most aggressive press in CONMEBOL; the squad press-resistance scores in the 2025 qualifying campaign were the highest of any South American team.

The midfield is the best in the Americas. Federico Valverde at Real Madrid is the captain in all but name and the player every Uruguayan tactical conversation since 2023 has been routed through. Manuel Ugarte joined Manchester United from PSG in summer 2024 and remains Bielsa's preferred defensive midfield screen. Rodrigo Bentancur at Tottenham is the second pivot. Up front, Darwin Núñez at Liverpool remains the focal point — direct, two-footed, the kind of striker the Bielsa system needs to make sense — and Maximiliano Araújo and Facundo Pellistri provide the wide rotation. Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez are two top-five-league centre-backs at their primes.

The Copa America 2024 semi-final loss to Colombia (1-0, a Jefferson Lerma header from a 39th-minute set-piece) was the proof-of-concept the federation hired Bielsa to deliver, and the public spat with Luis Suárez and other senior names in the aftermath was the cost. Suárez retired from international football in September 2024. Group H pairs Uruguay with Spain (the seeded European champion), Saudi Arabia (the pot-3 entrant whose 2-1 win over Argentina in Qatar 2022 remains the most-cited AFC-vs-CONMEBOL result of the modern era), and Cape Verde (the smallest African nation ever to qualify). The route to the round of 16 is real; the route to the quarter-final, where Uruguay's last three major-tournament campaigns have ended, is the campaign's actual test.

II.Colombia

Group K · Néstor Lorenzo · Copa America 2024 finalists, with the deepest forward line in CONMEBOL outside Argentina

The Lorenzo project, eighteen months from peak

Colombia arrive at the 2026 World Cup with the deepest CONMEBOL squad outside Argentina, a head coach whose Copa America 2024 run was the country's deepest tournament finish since the Pekerman era, and a structural question about whether the peak of the Lorenzo project — the summer 2024 Copa final — was the campaign or just its rehearsal. Néstor Lorenzo, Argentine, was appointed in June 2022 and has built the team around a 4-2-3-1 that asks James Rodríguez to dictate, Luis Díaz to run on the left, and a press-resistant pair (Lerma + Ríos) to hold the centre.

Luis Díaz at Liverpool is the most consistent attacking name. Daniel Muñoz at Crystal Palace has been the right-back / right wing-back hybrid that Lorenzo's shape has been built around. Davinson Sánchez at Galatasaray captains the back-line. Jhon Durán at Aston Villa is the rotating centre-forward option whose direct game gives Colombia a different look when needed. Richard Ríos's rise from Palmeiras into the European top-five-league market is the squad's 2025 highlight. James Rodríguez, now 34, is the captain and the player Colombia's attack runs through whenever he is on the pitch — the open question of the cycle being how often Lorenzo will choose to start him in 2026.

The 2024 Copa America final was the proof-of-concept run: Colombia beat Brazil 1-1 (top of the group), Panama 5-0 (QF), Uruguay 1-0 (SF), then lost the final 1-0 to Argentina in extra time at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The 28-match unbeaten run that the Lorenzo era had assembled ended in that final, and the eighteen months since have been the project rebuilding around what to do once the senior names hit 35. Group K is winnable: Portugal (Ronaldo's last cycle) is the seeded test, DR Congo are the intercontinental winner, Uzbekistan are debutants. Colombia's best ever World Cup finish was the quarter-final at Brazil 2014, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts and James Rodríguez won the Golden Boot. The 2026 bar is the same.

III.Ecuador

Group E · Sebastián Beccacece · the deepest-CV Ecuadorian squad ever assembled

Caicedo at Chelsea, Hincapié at Leverkusen, Páez at 19

Ecuador arrive at the 2026 World Cup with the most-credentialed La Tri squad in living memory and a manager hired to finally make it look like one. Sebastián Beccacece, Argentine, took the job in June 2024 after Félix Sánchez's fifteen-month tenure did not survive the early stages of qualifying. Beccacece is the third consecutive non-Ecuadorian to manage the team at senior level (after Gustavo Alfaro and Sánchez), and his 4-3-3 — Caicedo as the screen, narrow midfield, two creative wingers — is the system designed to make the squad play like its CVs rather than the country's tournament history.

Moisés Caicedo at Chelsea is the engine. His £115m August 2023 transfer remains the most expensive Ecuadorian footballer in history; Beccacece has built the entire shape around what Caicedo gives in midfield recoveries and ball progression. Piero Hincapié at Bayer Leverkusen started every match of the club's 2023-24 Bundesliga-winning season and is the left-sided ball-playing centre-back the back-line needs. Kendry Páez at Chelsea — nineteen years old, signed from Independiente del Valle in January 2024 with the move delayed until his 18th birthday — is the post-Valencia generation's creative ten and the player Ecuador's attack has finally begun to look genuinely modern around. Pervis Estupiñán at Brighton anchors the left side; Enner Valencia in Brazil at Internacional remains the senior attacking presence.

The 2024 Copa America quarter-final (1-1 vs Argentina, lost 4-2 on penalties) was the federation's proof-point that Beccacece had built the right system. Group E at the World Cup is the hardest non-pot-1 group in the tournament. Germany under Julian Nagelsmann is the seeded test. Ivory Coast are the reigning African champion. Curaçao are the pot-4 underdog. A genuine three-way fight for second place behind Germany — and a second-place finish would set up Ecuador's deepest World Cup ever. The country has appeared at four previous World Cups (2002, 2006, 2014, 2022) and gone past the group stage only once: 2006, lost 1-0 to England in the round of 16. The squad is, this cycle, finally good enough to do more.
