Argentina defend the title with the same manager, the same captain, and the same spine they won it with — plus the structural problem every previous defender has faced: Italy 1990, Brazil 1998, France 2002, Italy 2010, Spain 2014, Germany 2018, and France 2022 all went out at the group stage or the round of 16 the cycle after lifting the trophy.
